Kerala Basic Fact : Kerala (38,863 km²; 1.18% of India's landmass) is situated between the Arabian Sea to the west and the Western Ghats to the east. Kerala's coast runs some 580 km in length, while the state itself varies between 35–120 km in width.



The WESTERN GHATS Which are also known as the Sahyadri Mountains, from the western edge of the Deccan Plateau. 

Western Ghats are known as Sahyadri in northern Maharashtra, Sahya Parvatam in Kerala and Nilagiri Malai(Blue Mountain) in Tamil Nadu.

 The Western Ghats extended from the south of the Tapti River near the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra  to Kanyakumari .

The Western Ghats lie parallel to the western coast. 

@ Tropical Evergreen forest is found in heavy rainfall areas of the Western Ghats, island groups and upper parts of Assam

The states of  Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are covered by the Ghats.

The height of the Western Ghats progressively increases from north to south.

The highest peaks include the AnaiMudi (2,695metres) and the Doda Betta (2,637 metres)

The rivers that originate in Western Ghats and flow towards east include three major rivers viz.  Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. 

The rivers that originate in Western Ghats and flow towards west are Periyar, Bharathappuzha, Netravati, Sharavathi, Mandovi etc.

Most of the rivers flowing westward from the Western Ghats do not form deltas because 
 of the high gradient

@ The southern part of the Western Ghats mountain ranges harbour the Nilgiri hills, which serve as the meeting point of the Western and Eastern Ghats.

There are a number of gaps and passes in the Western Ghats,
                      Thal Ghat : Nasik to MumbaiA
                      Bhor Ghat : Mumbai to Pune
                      Senkota Pass: Nagarkvoil to Cardamon Hill
                      Pal ghat : Kerala to Tamilnadu 
The Western Ghats are called Ecological hotspot of India. It is one of the hottest spots in the world.

It is sometimes called the Great Escarpment of India.
